Martin Škoviera:
Bounding Hamilton cycles in embedded cubic graphs
Abstract:
In this talk we develop the idea that embedding a cubic graph into a closed surface can serve as a convenient tool for finding a Hamilton cycle in it. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a cubic graph embedded in a closed surface, orientable or not, to have a bounding Hamilton cycle. With this characterisation and its consequences we can guarantee Hamilton cycles in wide classes of cubic graphs. Among others, we can provide a unified and relatively short proof of a result due to Glover, Marusic, Kutnar, and others proved in a series of four papers published over the years 1996-2012 that cubic Cayley graphs of finite quotients of the modular group have a Hamilton path and, except in one special case, they also have a Hamilton cycle. We also show that in the remaining case these graphs have no bounding Hamilton cycle, which indicates that identifying Hamilton cycles for this case is likely to be very difficult.
This is a joint work with Roman Nedela.

Erasmus Welcome Week – September 2026

Faculty of Management, Comenius University Bratislava welcomes 154 new international Erasmus...

Welcome Week welcomed new international students
Welcome Week took place from 14 to 18 September 2026, bringing together incoming Erasmus students, international students from the National Scholarship Programme (NSP), and students arriving under university agreements.
The programme began on Monday with a joint matriculation ceremony at the Rectorate of Comenius University Bratislava. The opening events also included a reception and a Slovak language course, which gave students an introduction to the language and an opportunity to meet other international students.
Throughout the week, students attended information sessions at their respective faculties, where they received practical guidance on studying and living at Comenius University. The student organisation ESN also organised a tour of Bratislava and other group activities.
This semester, the Faculty of Management welcomes 154 new international Erasmus students from partner universities in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Türkiye. The NSP students come mainly from Uzbekistan, as well as from Japan and Taiwan.
The first days of activities were marked by a warm atmosphere, curiosity about the new surroundings and the pleasure of meeting fellow students from different countries. The connections and friendships formed during Welcome Week have given students a wonderful start to their time at the Faculty of Management.
We hope our international students will feel at home here. Their presence will bring fresh energy and an international atmosphere to the faculty’s corridors and classrooms throughout the winter semester, along with many opportunities to get to know one another and work together.

Doctoral colloquium - Marek Šuppa (28.9.2026)

Marek Šuppa:
AI Can Do Your PhD. So Why Are You Doing (NLP) Research?
Abstract:
No matter how you look at it, doing AI research has become weird in the past few months. Models can write code, run experiments, draft papers, argue with reviewers, review other papers to pay your dues, and even run the obligatory victory lap on social media when your work somehow gets accepted. Meanwhile, conferences drown in submissions and everyone is still told to publish more. It is tempting to blame AI but that misses the point: AI did not create the rat race, it just made running it much cheaper.
Since my last PhD colloquium, I have, somewhat ironically, added a few more papers to the pile myself. In this talk, I’ll use that progress, and our recent work on Slovak and low-resource NLP, to ask some increasingly uncomfortable questions. If AI can automate most of the publication loop, are we still training researchers for the right job (or any real job, that is)? If systems can increasingly choose experiments, learn from the results, and improve how they do research, why does an academic career still look remarkably similar? And if research itself starts becoming a recursive self-improving loop, what exactly will we need career researchers for?

Bratislava, 21 September, 2026: Comenius University Bratislava (CU) today marked the opening of its...

At the opening ceremony in the CU Auditorium, the Rector awarded Gold Medals of Comenius University Bratislava to four individuals whose work has made an exceptional contribution to both CU and Slovak society. Professor Marián Šuráb received a Gold Medal for his longstanding contribution to theological education and the university’s academic life. The award honours his teaching and research, as well as his commitment to promoting the values of learning, dialogue and humanity.
Dr Elena Kohútiková also received a CU Gold Medal for her significant contribution to the university’s development and her longstanding work building links between academia and professional practice in business and finance. The award recognises her expertise, her support for the university’s strategic direction and her personal dedication to the academic community.
Professor Ján Rudy was honoured for his major contribution to the development of CU, particularly its Faculty of Management. The medal recognises his many years of academic service, his contribution to management education and his role in establishing the Faculty as an integral part of the university.
The Rector also awarded a CU Gold Medal to Professor Emil Višňovský for his significant contributions to philosophical thought, the advancement of knowledge and higher education. The award honours his many years of academic service and research, and his role in shaping generations of CU students. Professor Višňovský did not attend the ceremony and will receive his award at a later date.
In his address to the entire academic community, CU Rector Marek Števček reflected on the profound significance of teaching as a vocation and the value of human life. “The reality of death is inexorable and cruelly final. I realised how fortunate we are to live an ordinary life. How often we grumble and feel dissatisfied over things that do not matter at all. And how fortunate we are, as educators in the broadest sense of the word, to be able to influence young people’s lives,” the Rector emphasised.
He also paid tribute to students whose lives had been cut short. “We owe a great deal to the memory of all the students who lost their lives during their studies,” Marek Števček said. He announced that CU would henceforth observe 2 October each year as an official day of remembrance for deceased students. He added that paying tribute cannot undo the tragedy of death, but can give it a more enduring place in the university community’s collective memory.
The solemnity of the occasion was enhanced by a closing musical performance by recent CU graduate Michaela Čakváriová, who performed a selection of popular and original songs to guitar and piano accompaniment.
CU is the only Slovak university to feature in most prestigious university rankings. Across its thirteen faculties in Bratislava, Martin and Nitra, it offers education at all levels of study (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and PhD studies) through more than 800 study programmes in which it is authorised to confer the respective academic degrees.

prof. Gianfranco Pacchioni (Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Università di Milano-Bicocca):
From Open Science to the Monopoly of Knowledge: Is Academic Research Declining?
Abstract:
Scientific discoveries happen quietly, yet they often lead to radically transformative technologies. It is commonly thought that these discoveries take place in public research laboratories and universities, and indeed that was the case in the past, but things are changing. New players have emerged: Big Tech companies, aiming at a highly ambitious goal, the monopoly of knowledge. Thanks to enormous profits, Big Tech has been investing in research and development for years through the acquisition of start-ups and the creation of secret research laboratories staffed by outstanding, highly paid researchers with virtually unlimited resources. Big Tech has expanded its horizons toward technologies destined to revolutionize our tomorrow: quantum computing, cryptography, neuroscience, brain–machine interaction, satellite communications, space exploration, and above all health, genetics, and biotechnology, without, of course, forgetting artificial intelligence. All of this takes place beyond any form of public oversight. If we add to this the fact that a significant share of technological innovation comes from military research, secret by definition, two very different faces of contemporary science emerge. Public, open, and transparent academic science on the one hand; private, confidential, and inaccessible science on the other. In short, clear science and dark science. In this context, funding public research is no longer just a matter of competition between systems (public vs. private); it is fundamental to the defence of democracy and promote trust in science. Understanding this scenario is essential to ensure that science benefits everyone and helps reduce inequalities rather than increase them.
On October 6 and 7, 2026, Prof. Gianfranco Pacchioni will be a guest of Comenius University in Bratislava.

Doctoral colloquium - Lukáš Radoský (21.9.2026)

Monday 21.9.2026 at 13:10, Lecture room I 9

Lukáš Radoský:
Optimization and reuse in large software systems
Abstract:
Software engineering is a discipline exploring how to create and maintain software effectively. It is an ever-evolving field always eager for new ideas where the rate of accepting new ideas is only matched by the rate they are discarded - be they programming frameworks, modelling approaches, or overall approaches to software development.
We started our research years ago hoping to develop our initial idea of software models that combine visualisation with real-time execution, potentially leading to code generation. While the visualisation and real-time execution are still relevant to explore and we have successfully published in this area, code generation has been overtaken with advert of large language models. This being the case, we expanded our initial goals to also exploring usage of LLMs in software development. We have already managed to publish some results in various areas of software development, particularly in software documentation retrieval, reverse engineering, modelling, and testing. In relation to natural language usage in software artifacts such as software documentation, we also fell down the rabit hole of natural language processing, having yielded publications in the areas of sentiment analysis and semantic textual similarity.
Right now, we are eyeing the exploration of the usage of metaheuristic and some deterministic algorithms for prompt engineering and ways to reduce UML diagram size when working with LLMs to reduce token consumption.

NEW RANKING ASSESSES UNIVERSITY COLLABORATION: CU PLACES 320TH IN PSYCHOLOGY, WITH STRONG RESULTS IN PHYSICS AND PHARMACY

Bratislava, 15 September 2026: Comenius University Bratislava (CU) has performed well in the first...

Psychology was CU’s highest-ranked discipline in the index, placing 320th worldwide. Other strong, internationally competitive fields included physics and astronomy in 335th place, and pharmacology, toxicology and pharmacy in 420th.
The ranking uses publicly available bibliometric and international grant databases. Its first edition covers the period from 2021 to 2025, during which CU produced more than 14,700 co-authored publications. Its partnership network spans 916 universities in 75 countries. The strength and continuity of these relationships are another important indicator of quality: CU maintains close, long-term partnerships with more than 580 institutions.
One of CU’s strengths is its role as a key international partner. As many as 85 per cent of its core partnerships are classified as “unique links”. This means that the university connects research teams and communities in different parts of the world that would otherwise not come into contact with one another.
The
assesses the research environment across six pillars: international intensity, sustained partnership, partner-country diversity, partner reach, collaboration impact (measured through field-normalised citation impact) and network influence. The resulting score thus provides a faithful measure of an institution’s openness and engagement with the international research community.
Other university rankings have also recently published their results. The prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities (
), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, placed CU 1,058th. The same organisation, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, also publishes the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (
), in which CU ranks in the 401–500 band in both physics and psychology.
