From 9 to 11 September 2026, the Faculty of Law of Comenius University Bratislava hosted the Summer...

From 9 to 11 September 2026, the Faculty of Law of Comenius University Bratislava hosted the Summer School on European Economic Area (EEA) Law, organised within the Jean Monnet Module 3BVERS.
One of the main aims of the Summer School was to bring the European Economic Area closer to students and to raise awareness of a field which, despite its importance for European integration and the functioning of the internal market, remains relatively underrepresented in legal education and academic debate.
The in-person programme was preceded by a series of pre-recorded lectures delivered by Igor Sloboda from the Institute of European Law at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University Bratislava. The lectures introduced participants to the foundations of EEA law, its institutional and judicial systems, the internal market, the incorporation of EU law into the EEA Agreement, competition law, and the EEA and Norway Grants.
During the first day, the following speakers took part:

Jozef Kšiňan, European Labour Authority (ELA) – The European Labour Authority and the European Economic Area

Igor Sloboda, Faculty of Law, Comenius University Bratislava – “About Us Without Us?” Participation of the EEA/EFTA States in EU Law-Making and The Internal Market Beyond the EU: Specific Features of the EEA

The second day brought perspectives from the EFTA States:

Rolf Einar Fife, Ambassador-designate of the Kingdom of Norway – The Development of the EEA Agreement and Norway’s Experience with the EEA

Runólfur Oddsson, Consul of the Slovak Republic in Iceland – Iceland’s Experience with the EEA and Cooperation between Iceland and Slovakia

The third day featured:

Rebekka Benesch, Ambassador-designate, Embassy of Switzerland in Slovakia – Switzerland and the EU: Key Facts and Current Developments

Igor Sloboda, Faculty of Law, Comenius University Bratislava – Between Membership and Non-Membership: Different Paths of European Integration

Vladimír Šucha, European University Institute – AI, Power and Law: Geopolitical and Security Aspects of Artificial Intelligence

Juraj Plaza, Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic – Freedom to Provide Services and Its Social Dimension: Posting of Workers in the EEA

Interactive sessions provided participants with an opportunity to work in groups, discuss practical cases and reflect on the advantages and limitations of the EEA model of European integration.
The Summer School brought together academic expertise, institutional experience and diplomatic perspectives from the EFTA States, offering participants an opportunity to examine the European Economic Area from a range of legal and practical perspectives.
We would like to thank all speakers, guests and participants for their valuable contributions and active engagement throughout the Summer School.
The module is co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme – Jean Monnet Actions (2025–2028). Project No. 101239932 — 3BVERS — ERASMUS-JMO-2025-MODULE.

FMPI scientists on a unique satellite hunt over the Pacific

Slovak scientists from Comenius University Bratislava have once again made history in space safety...

ESA’s Cluster-II mission spent many years studying the space environment. When the mission came to an end, specialists planned the satellites’ controlled re-entry into the atmosphere, where they would burn up safely. Following successful observations of the first satellite, Salsa, in 2024, scientists turned their attention to the final pair, Samba and Tango, in late August and early September 2026.
A flying laboratory aboard a jet
The ROSIE mission (Re-entry Observation Setup and International Execution) aimed to collect the most precise astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic data possible on how objects break apart as they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. Capturing these hard-to-obtain measurements required meticulous planning and extensive logistical and technical preparation:
· Preparations in Sydney: The scientific team assembled in Sydney, Australia, on 24 August 2026, where they transformed a private jet operated by Falcon Air into a flying laboratory equipped with 60 specialised instruments.
· Transfer to Tonga: The team then travelled from Australia to the islands of Tonga, the closest inhabited land to the predicted re-entry area.
· Successful observations from 150 km away: Although adverse weather prevented observations from the ground or from ships, precise calculations and flight planning enabled the airborne team to record the break-up of Samba on 31 August and the final satellite, Tango, on 1 September, from a distance of approximately 150 km.
Slovakia’s key role in the ESA project
Slovak experts played a prominent role in the international mission. Astros Solutions s.r.o. managed and coordinated ROSIE on ESA’s behalf. The company is led by Dr Jiří Šilha and Dr Matej Zigo, both graduates of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at Comenius University Bratislava (FMPI CU).
Tomáš Vörös, MSc, and Dr Tomáš Paulech joined the observation flights over the Pacific on behalf of FMPI CU. Both work in the Division of Astronomy and Astrophysics within the Department of Astronomy, Physics of the Earth and Meteorology.
Why were close-range observations so important?
Visible-light and infrared recordings of the satellites breaking apart provide unique insights into how materials fragment in the atmosphere. As the number of satellites in orbit grows rapidly, ensuring space safety and reducing space debris are becoming ever more pressing priorities.
The European Space Agency also highlighted the success of ROSIE. The mission’s success demonstrates that CU researchers and graduates are among the world’s leading space scientists.

Preparations took place in Bankstown, Australia, in late August 2026. Led by Astros Solutions, the team aimed to gather as much re-entry data as possible as Cluster 3 and 4 entered the Earth’s atmosphere. The satellites re-entered approximately 24 hours apart over a remote area of the South Pacific, on 31 August and 1 September 2026 respectively. Credit: Astros Solutions/ROSIE.
Photo 2: On 31 August and 1 September 2026, the last two of the four satellites that made up ESA’s Cluster mission entered the Earth’s atmosphere over a remote area of the South Pacific. The two satellites, Samba and Tango, followed similar trajectories about 24 hours apart. The ground station at Kourou in French Guiana (KRU) was the last to track the satellites, following them until shortly before they re-entered the atmosphere and burned up. The station’s coverage area is shown in green. Credit: ESA.

New 24-hour pharmacy combines teaching, expert care and public service

A round-the-clock pharmacy service returned to Bratislava on 1 September 2026. The pharmacy on...

Access to medicines at night has long been a serious problem in the Bratislava Region, as even pharmacies providing out-of-hours services previously closed by 10.00 pm. The new 24-hour pharmacy will help patients who need medication urgently, whether after visiting an emergency department, following a sudden illness in a child or adult, or when a prescription is issued late at night.
Situated on Ružinovská Street close to Ružinov Hospital, the pharmacy has a long history of providing overnight services and is a natural location for the new 24-hour operation. It was a difficult decision to suspend its night service in summer 2024 due to operational problems. After intensive discussions with BSK, however, a sustainable solution was found. BSK will subsidise the pharmacy’s 24-hour operation, while FPHARM CU will provide the necessary expertise and staff.
“As a university, we have brought together the public interest and the expertise available at CU's Faculty of Pharmacy. This allows us to fulfil a new role for public universities by making a tangible, clearly defined contribution to society that the public both wants and needs,” said Ján Klimas, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of CU, at the opening.
For the Faculty of Pharmacy of CU, restoring 24-hour operation is more than a return to providing an out-of-hours service: it is also a major step forward in the quality of its teaching and the range of services it provides. The teaching pharmacy is an important healthcare facility where students gain hands-on experience in a working environment under the supervision of experienced pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
Dean Klimas pointed out that European legislation and education standards require future pharmacists to be prepared to deliver prevention programmes and public health campaigns. The project takes teaching out of the classroom and brings students into direct contact with patients.
“This will be about more than dispensing medicines at night and providing an out-of-hours service. In our discussions with the Region, we considered other services that we want to offer residents, ranging from awareness and screening programmes to advice on medicines and their use. This is also important to me as the academic lead for the Pharmacy study programme, because we train our students to provide a full range of public health services,” Ján Klimas added.
