Activities
The organization and management of the Comenius University in Bratislava, Science Park
Leader of the research activity: Prof. RNDr. Ján Turňa, CSc.
The aim of this activity is to establish and organize CU SP as an autonomous internal organizational unit of the Comenius University (CU) in Bratislava focused on applied research and transfer of research results into practice, including the protection of intellectual property rights of CU.
Biomedicine for the 21st Century – new diagnostic procedures – genomics, proteomics
Leader of the research activity: Prof. MUDr. Milan Buc, CSc.
The aim of this activity is the use of new modern methods for detecting genetic nature of monogenic and polygenic diseases and infectious diseases based on whole-genome next-gen principles (next-gen DNA sequencing, DNA microarray, analysis of Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH), SNP analysis, analysis of Copy Number Variation (CNV), etc.).
Biomedicine for the 21st Century – new diagnostic procedures – metabolomics
Leader of the research activity: doc.RNDr. Ivan Ostrovský, CSc.
Modern metabolomics is a part of the so-called personalized medicine (21st Century Medicine), which is focused on individualization of searching, prevention or treatment of disorders and diseases. Research of the metabolic pathways and individual components of the metabolite by current methods of analytical chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology increasingly enables an individual approach to patients. The current combined analytical methods and integrated research of several disciplines enable the individualization of examinations and extend the range of disorders and diseases of organism (human, animal or plant) that nowadays we know to seek, identify and diagnose. The aim of this activity is to extend existing knowledge in the field of metabolomics by new knowledge focused on preparation of connected methods of searching, diagnostics and/or the screening of selected groups of human diseases.
Biomedicine for the 21st Century – new substances and materials for the diagnostics
Leader of the research activity: Prof. RNDr. Anton Gáplovský, DrSc.
Modern molecular medicine is a part of the so-called personalized medicine (21st Century Medicine), which is focused on individualization of searching, prevention or treatment of disorders and diseases. Research of the current state of the organism (human, animal or plant) enables an individual approach to it. The current methods and integrated research of several disciplines enable the individualization of examinations and extend the range of disorders and diseases of organism (human, animal or plant) that nowadays we know to seek, identify and diagnose. Relevant special substances and materials are a part of these modern research, searching and diagnostic procedures. Their realization is not possible without these substances and materials (e. g. labeled substances and materials used as standards or materials used in biosensors). The aim of activity is to extend existing knowledge in the field of substances and materials used for research and diagnostic purposes by new substances and materials used in molecular medicine.
Environ-medicine for the 21st Century – biotic and abiotic factors of the country and their influence
Leader of the research activity: Prof. RNDr. Vladimír Kováč, CSc.
Environmental medicine, as a discipline that integrates knowledge from several research and applied fields, is increasingly becoming a regular part of taking care of the environment. It enables seeking and finding the complex solutions that maintain the quality of landscape and quality of life. The main objective of this activity is to develop methods and procedures for detecting, preventing and reducing negative effects and impacts of biotic and abiotic factors of the country on health.
Environ-medicine for the 21st Century – geographical information system and environmental health
Leader of the research activity: doc. RNDr. Eva Mičietová, PhD.
Informatization of research, its application and the transfer of knowledge into practice is an integral part of these activities. Their complexity is not possible without information technology. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are basic tool in the fields of the environment, medicine and other disciplines, including the national economy, national policies and socio-economic development of society. The aim of this activity is the use of technologies of Geographic Information Systems for integration, analysis and accessing the environmental data and public data on indicators and population health, as well as the development of tools to assess the impact of environmental risk factors on population health.
Biotechnologies for the 21st Century
Leader of the research activity: Prof. RNDr. Ján Turňa, CSc.
Over the several decades, biotechnologies are not only the most important technologies in research but also in practice. Biotechnology is one of the most perspective areas for further development due to the enormous scale and pace of arrival of new knowledge in this field.
Medicine and environment are sectors in that biotechnology is developed as a research discipline, as well as sectors that necessarily need biotechnologies and their results for their own development. These sectors would not function without biotechnologies. Therefore, this activity has become an organic and integral part of this project. The aim of this activity is the design and selection of specific recombinant proteins and peptides with therapeutic potential (e. g., recombinant human growth hormone, recombinant human thrombin, specific proteases, peptides and industrially useful recombinant enzymes, but also the construction of own expression systems for heterologous expression (production) of recombinant proteins and peptides, isolation of phages and creation of their collection that can be useful in medical practice as well as in the food industry. The aim of this activity is also the research in phytoremediaton and fixation of CO2 in biomass and practical application of its results.
Social challenges for the 21st Century – bioethical challenges in cultural framework
Leader of the research activity: Prof. PhDr. Zlatica Plašienková, CSc.
The aim of this activity is to research the cultural and social frameworks of biomedicine, environmental medicine and biotechnologies as the challenges of modern society. Specifically, it is the research in the philosophical, ethical, anthropological, ethnological, legal, religious, linguistic and informative context.
Social challenges for the 21st Century – law challenges
Leader of the research activity: Prof. JUDr. Mária Patakyová, PhD.
The society and its further development currently face very complex challenges. Therefore, the research in social and human sciences, its results and application in practice have an increasingly critical importance for society. It is desirable to integrate the research and application of its results in practice (i. e. connecting the results of research in natural sciences, pharmaceutical and medical research with the results of environmental research and research in social sciences and humanities). This integration of research and its results will apply solutions that ensure the so-called sustainable development. These societal challenges include the challenges in the field of legal sciences because the legal sciences and their solutions ensure the legitimate and correct legislative regulation of the application of the results of other sciences to society. This is a necessity in today's massive quantitative, socio-economically complex and highly differentiated society. Therefore, the aim of this activity will be the creation of original solutions and practical outcomes in the field of legal sciences as an organic part of the research and applications of molecular medicine, environmental medicine and biotechnologies. These will be presented in the following areas:
1. Patent law
2. “Ordre public”
3. Human rights aspects
4. Corporate and financial aspects of rentability and economic role of the state, alternative dispute resolution and E-commerce
5. Legislative harmonization in the European Union
6. Perception of different legislation during the historical development and the influence of the world events
Social challenges for the 21st Century – socio-economic challenges
